How To Make Cold Brew Coffee

6/19/2019

Our Head Roaster's Instructions

You’ve just purchased your first bag of Spirit Mountain Coffee. Great! This is the first step to brewing the perfect cup of coffee. All of Spirit Mountain’s coffee beans are roasted to order, ensuring you will have the freshest beans possible. Freshly roasted, quality beans are a prerequisite for a great result.

Just as important as quality coffee is clean, fresh water. Spring water is best. Tap water typically has chlorine added which can significantly affect the final taste in a negative way. Distilled water has been stripped of all minerals. Minerals are an important part of the flavor profile. Distilled water isn’t recommended either. Clean water + fresh beans = delicious coffee.

Cold brew coffee is brewed at room temperature and served cold. The process is similar to making a cup of tea, but takes a longer period of time. Coarsely ground beans are allowed to steep in room temperature water overnight, then poured through a filter to remove the grounds.  The resulting liquid is chilled and generally served over ice.

Instructions:
  • Measure out beans.  A good starting point for this recipe is 12 oz. of coffee to 1 gallon of water. Remember, personal tastes will vary so experiment!
  • Grind beans to a coarse finish think of the texture of cornmeal.

  • Add beans to a pitcher or other container that will hold the volume of water and beans you are using. Pour the water over the grounds. Give the mixture a gentle stir to ensure the water comes into contact with all of the coffee.
  • Allow the coffee and water mixture to steep for 14-18 hours at room temperature.
  • After steeping, pour the mixture through a filter into the container(s) you would like to store it in.
  • Refrigerate your cold brew. Cold brew will last for at least a week if refrigerated.
