Get The Most Out of Your CoffeeYou’ve just ordered three bags of your favorite Spirit Mountain coffees. Smart! Three bags equals free shipping. Now, how do you ensure you get the best flavor out of each bag? The most important thing to understand about preserving coffee beans is that air is the enemy. The longer the beans are exposed to air, the faster they begin to express stale flavors. Vacuum sealed containers like those pictured below are a storage solution to maintain freshness. Keep your containers in a cool, dry and dark location such as a cupboard. In addition to purchasing an aftermarket container and storing it properly, there are a few best practices you can follow to get the most out of your coffee.
First, if you have multiple bags, go through them serially. In other words, do not open the second bag until you have finished the first. Do not open the third until you’ve finished the second, and so on. We seal each bag to preserve its freshness and want you to have the freshest coffee possible. A sealed bag will remain good for up to 2-3 months. Second, order your beans whole. We encourage Spirit Mountain coffee drinkers to order our beans whole. Freshness is maintained and you will be able to grind your beans to the coarseness you desire. Third, grind only what you need. We recommend that you use a ratio of 2 tablespoons of whole bean coffee to 8 oz of water for the pour over and drip method. Keep this in mind as you’re thinking about how many cups to brew. Following these simple steps will help you get the most out of your coffee. You’ll save money and won’t create as much waste. That’s a wrap for coffee preservation 101.
